Complicando lo sencillo: el Aligator de Lafosse

Pues he terminado mi segundo intento de hacer el Aligator Americano de Lafosse

I finally finished my second attempt to fold Lafosse's American Alligator

Definitivamente esta figura es muy compleja. Pero esa complejidad no se debe a que la base sea díficil o que sean muchos pasos. Al contrario, se trata de una base muy simple y los diagramas comprenden menos de 40 pasos.

This is a truly complex model. But the complexity is not given by a difficult base. In fact, the base is very simple and the whole model is made in less than 40 steps.

Lo díficil tampoco son las escamas, son tediosas, pero no difíciles.

On the other hand, making the scales may be tedious but it is also easy.

La complejidad, es hacer esa simple base en el papel ya con escamas. Y definitivamente, lograr un buen modelado tampoco es fácil.

The complexity of this model, lies on making that simple base using the pleated sheet with scales. And obtaining a good shaping is harder than it looks.

Una vez que se ha superado el plegado de la base, la parte que puede resultar más complicada es el hecho de que las puntas para sacar las patas delanteras, son extremadamente cortas. De hecho, por un rato estuve a punto de tirarlo a la basura por ese asunto.

Once the base is finished, the most difficult part of this model may be the fact that the front legs seem to be very short. In fact, I almost gave up because of that.

Sin embargo, después de un rato, y enmedio de mi frustración porque estaba convencida de que no había error ya que la base sin escamas tenía igual de cortas esas puntas, le perdí todo el respeto al trabajo previo y decidí tomar medidas extremas.

Empecé a jalar y a desdoblar y, ¡¡Oh sopresa!! Me di cuenta que justamente esa era la solución...

Finally, I decided to take extreme measures when I was frustated enough to give up to all the previous work I had done.

Fortunately, I found the solution: What I did, was to pull and unfold some pleats and the front legs adquired the right size.

No muy bien modelado, pero ya luce como un aligator... y ¡Qué alegría!!, tiene las 4 patas
The shaping is not very good, but at least it looks like an alligator and... It has four legs. I'm so happy!!!

Así que si están atorados en esa parte, sólo jalen cuidadosamente, desdoblen algunas capas de escamas y verán como cambian esas patas.

So if you are stuck with the front legs, just pull out carefully and unfold some pleats. This way, you will get a right size for the front legs.

Definitivamente es un modelo hermoso que bien vale la pena todo el trabajo; voy a repetirlo utilizando un mejor papel y espero obtener un modelado final mucho mejor.

This model is worth the work. I'm going to make it again and I hope the shaping will be much better.

Si lo van a intentar, háganlo con paciencia, escojan un papel delgado y les recomiendo que lo traten con metilcelulosa antes de empezar, esto facilita enormemente el plegado de la figura.

If you are going to try it, be patient, choose a thin paper and treat it with methylcelullose before folding it. This will make your life easier while folding.

Finalmente, utilicen al menos un cuadrado de 60 x 60 cm ya que con las escamas se reduce su tamaño en un 75% aproximadamente

The last but not the least: The paper size must be at least 60 x 60 cm. The scales will reduce the sheet at least 75 percent of the original size.
